Safe words and stop signals: a simple guide for couples

How to agree on a safe word, what to use when speech is not possible, and how to check in without killing the mood.

Choose the word before you start

Pick a word that would never come up in the moment, not 'no' or 'stop', which can be part of a role. Say it out loud together once so it feels normal to use. Agree that the word ends everything straight away, without questions or disappointment.

The traffic-light system

Green means all good, keep going. Yellow means slow down or change something. Red means stop now. It lets either partner steer the evening without stopping it completely, and a quick 'colour?' is an easy way to check in.

When speech is not possible

With a gag, a hood or a full mouth, a spoken word will not work. Agree a signal you can give with your hands: tapping three times, or holding a small object such as a ball or keys and dropping it to mean stop. Test the signal once before you begin.

After you stop

When the safe word or signal is used, release any restraint first, then talk. Offer water, warmth and a few minutes together. Using the safe word is the system working, not the evening failing.
